Nanaimo Acupuncture News

Clinic closed

Just a word of warning, the clinic will be closed Saturday, April 28th.

There’s an acupuncture conference in Vancouver that is really exciting and may also make treatments here at the clinic a little better.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Acupuncture for Volunteer Nanaimo

Getting all my ducks in a row, I’ve arranged the fundraiser for Volunteer Nanaimo on Sunday, April 20th.
Volunteer Nanaimo is the central hub for local non-profit organisations, helping these groups to help people in ways that we never see or just take for granted.

This is the first fundraiser since the switch to Sundays from Saturdays and I’m looking forward to setting some precedent for me working my butt off and giving these folk a big bunch of money.
Look forward to seeing you!

Acupuncture for Haven Society

Finally returning after a long break are fundraising events!
Saturday April 14th we are collecting donations for
Haven Society. This is a timely event as the Haven Society has had to make some cutbacks do to greatly increased demand for services without a matching rise in funding.

We’ve been in talks for weeks to get this arranged and I hope that as many people come as I can fit in to give to this great organisation. As a special treat I’ll have an extra acupuncturist working in the clinic, Bibijana Bennekou so on one hand I actually get a lunch break, but that’s one more pair of hands to keep busy so even more incentive to come out and work us to near death for a great cause!

This is the final Saturday fundraising event for the foreseeable future as the “Pay what you want days” are moving to Sundays beginning in May

New Clinic Hours

Beginning May 1st the clinic will be moving the Saturday “Pay what you want day” to Sundays.
The time will remain the same: 10:00-3:00, just a different day.

Apologies for the change, the Saturday shift is the busiest one of the week; but I have a new time commitment which I can’t change. Hopefully a months notice will be enough for everyone to get used to it.

Acupuncture and The Nanaimo Women's Resource Centre #3

On October 22nd we’re having another community event, fundraising again for the Nanaimo Women’s Resource Centre.

All proceeds we collect from this donation day will go towards funding programs for women and children in Nanaimo.

Acupuncture and Nanaimo Loaves and Fishes

On September 24th we’re having another community event, fundraising for Nanaimo Loaves and Fishes.

All proceeds we collect from this donation day will go towards funding programs which feeds thousands of people every week right here in Nanaimo.

Update:
Considering we didn’t have a very long lead time to advertise this event, it went really well. Today we raised $120 for this very worthwhile organization. Thanks to everyone who came and gave!

Leadership

I recently came across an interesting speaker talking about apathy, specifically within politics, but very relevant to basic living within our community.

One point struck me as particularly important - “A heroic effort is a collective effort”.

In this election season, as in every other election season previous and yet to come, we are bombarded with messages saying, “Vote for us and we will help”.
But we don’t need politicians to change our lives for us; the problems are around us, they affect us and if we want to change them, we need to do the work ourselves.

All I know is acupuncture; I’m not a counsellor, a therapist, a nutritionist or anything else. So I have to use what I know in a way that can benefit the people around me. Our Saturday donation days are in full swing and our first partnership day with the Nanaimo Women’s Centre will be coming in May. Stay tuned for more details.

CARE Day

Community Acupuncture Reaching Everyone

What happens when a patient says that they can’t afford to follow a treatment plan to get better?

Most practitioners will just shrug their shoulders, they want to help but can’t afford to treat people who can’t pay. Even several of my community acupuncture colleagues have said that they would turn patients away who can’t pay the bottom end of the scale, or would allow a short term reprieve. I really don’t like this.

Community acupuncturists are at our best when we are driven to be there for the people who want to get good health care. We say that we are affordable to allow access for everyone; but if we turn people away, we cut off that access.

While I still have bills to pay for the clinic and my family, I want to be there to provide access for everyone who wants it. So while I can’t do it for free (still not a charity), I can make it so that at least once every week, people can pay whatever they are able, or want for acupuncture treatment.

All Saturday appointments are now pay by donation, somewhere between $1 and $100. Some of these CARE Days will be in partnership with other community organisations and donations will be turned back into the community. Stay tuned for more information as we build partnerships within Nanaimo.

See you soon,
Clayton

February Days

Well Lunar New Year is in full swing, Valentine's Day is just around the corner and we’re having another Free Acupuncture Day!

This is open to everyone; people new to the clinic, or even new to acupuncture, as well as current & old clients. No reason to exclude anyone and it makes a good treat - a free day is a break for anyone.

So if you want to come and
experience acupuncture and not a sales pitch then this day is for you.

Saturday, February 12th, 2011, for as long as I can stand up.

Free Acupuncture Day!

It’s been too long since ICA has hosted a Free Acupuncture Day, but now that things have settled it’s time to get back to work!

Saturday, November 13th we’re going to be hosting our second Free Acupuncture Day since moving to the Wentworth St location. So tell your friends and invite yourself along for a fun day of acupuncture!

See you soon,

Summer Special!

Do you have any friends or family who are interested in acupuncture, but haven’t given it a try yet?

Well now is a great opportunity for new patients to visit our clinic because for the summer of 2010,
the first visit is free!

Not much more that I can say about that, I mean it’s free acupuncture. So tell all your friends, tell the whole bunch, to come for acupuncture after lunch!

Update: The summer special went pretty well; I saw a lot of new patients come through the door, some never to return, but many people also came back for more treatment.

Report from the Metis Nation Health Fair

Today was the kickoff day for the Mid-Island Metis Nation Health Enhancement Program.

The Metis Nation is looking to educate and promote health awareness in their community, as well as for the larger community of Vancouver Island. Today was a good opportunity for the local Metis people, the local Snuneymuxw First Nation and the public to learn about some of the local services available for taking charge of our own health.

We saw a lot people over the day and donated acupuncture services to many of them, including a few people who hated needles before today. We were proud to be seen as a part of local health care and health advocacy and look forward to participating more in the future.

Stay tuned because there are plans for more health fairs this year and they are free for everyone to attend.

May Day 2010

On May 1st we will be participating in the Community Acupuncture Networks 8th annual Free Acupuncture Day.

The clinic will be providing free acupuncture from 10 until 4 this coming May Day, we look forward to seeing you there!

Please call 250.797.0973 to make your appointment before we fill up.

Nanaimo clinic is open

First of all, a big thank you to everyone who was with us from Inspired Health Naturopathic Clinic. We were there for over one year, and while it was sad to see Dr. Trevorrow leave Nanaimo for Victoria, she is much busier and happier down there.

Now things are moving for us up here in Nanaimo, I have found a new place at Wentworth Court. It’s primarily a language school but there are also a couple of great counsellors upstairs across from my new door. It’s exciting to have a new space and especially one just focusing on acupuncture treatment.

We are open with set hours now, as I am splitting my time between Nanaimo and a new clinic opening soon in Chemainus. The other new space should be up and running by the end of January. Busy, busy, but it’s keeping me out of trouble for the time being.

I look forward to working with everyone in the new year and we’ll see if we can’t have a special open house once we get fully settled.

All the best,
Clayton
