So what about Community Acupuncture?
Well, Community Acupuncture was inspired by how acupuncture is practiced in Asia. The fine folks at Working Class Acupuncture in Portland, Oregon saw a problem with the way that acupuncture has come to be practiced here in North America. The real problem was that the people in most need of adequate health care couldn't afford it.
From their experiences at their clinic and the will to change things for the better, they began an organisation called the Community Acupuncture Network which acts as a central hub to hundreds of acupuncturists across the world. In 2011, CAN gave way to a new healthcare co-operative, the People's Organisation of Community Acupuncture. POCA was designed from the ground up to give the pubic a voice
If you've had acupuncture before, you've probably been stripped half naked and plopped face down on a table. Maybe you've been left alone in a room wondering if your acupuncturist left for lunch and how much longer you can wait before your bladder bursts. Some profit-first clinics are trying to get into the market of "Community Style" by offering pro-rated treatments; you pay a fraction of their usual rate for a fraction of the treatment time. But the true Community Acupuncture model isn't about giving people less so practitioners can maximize profit. Community Acupuncture isn't a different "style" of acupuncture, it's a different way of practicing acupuncture. It's a new way of looking at the relationship between practitioner and patient.
